MISSION

IJSO

International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) is a competition in science for students who are fifteen years or younger on 31 st December of the competition year. IJSO aims to promote interest in science among school students, exposing them to problem solving, critical thinking and experimentation. Over the years IJSO aims to positively impact science and mathematics education at school level.

IJSO is held in December every year, in different countries. The 10th IJSO will be held from 3 to 12 December 2013 in Pune, India. About 50 countries will participate in this essentially educational event.

The academic competitions of the IJSO includes challenging tests in topics of science, both as theory questions and practical tasks. The tests are designed to address students' understanding of concepts, and their ability to apply concepts to the situations described in the tests.

An important aim of the Olympiads is for young people to experience different cultures and to bring about interactions between students from across the world. The Olympiads thus have a potential to promote global peace and understanding.

The IJSO statutes state that no country may have its delegation excluded from participation on political grounds, lack of diplomatic relations, lack of recognition by the government of the organizing country, imposed embargoes, or other similar reasons. It is expected that the team representing the country has been selected after some form of national effort.

Participation in the IJSO either by a host country, a delegation or an observer, signifies acceptance of the statutes governing the IJSO.

The event is organised in India by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, a national centre of theTata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai, an autonomous institution under the umbrella of the Department of Atomic Energy, as well as a Deemed University.

IMO

The Mathematical Olympiad Programme in India, which leads to participation of Indian students in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is organized by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) on behalf of the National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM) of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India. This programme is one of the major initiatives undertaken by the NBHM. Its main purpose is to spot mathematical talent among pre-university students in the country.

For the purpose of training and selection of students for the Olympiad contest, 25 regions all over the country have been designated and each assigned a Regional Coordinator. Additionally, three groups (Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) and Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathana (KVS) have a ‘Regional Coordinator’ each. The Mathematical Olympiad programme consists of five stages.

KVPY

The Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) is an on-going National Program of Fellowships in Basic Sciences, initiated and funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, to attract exceptionally and highly motivated students for pursuing basic science courses and research career in science.

The objectives of the program are to identify students with talent and aptitude for research; help them realize their potential in their studies; encourage them to take up research careers in Science, and ensure the growth of the best scientific minds for research and development in the country.

The selection of students is made from those studying in XI standard to 1st year in any undergraduate Program in Basic Sciences. Special groups/committees are set up at IISc, to screen the applications and conduct an aptitude test at various centers in the country. Based on the performance in the aptitude test, short-listed students are called for an interview which is the final stage of the selection procedure. For receiving a fellowship, both aptitude test and interview marks are considered.

Generous scholarships are provided up to the pre-Ph.D. level to the selected KVPY Fellows.
